Best fish and chips in Cromer

"No.1 Cromer | Fish and Chips | Restaurant and Takeaway" in Cromer, England, is a renowned restaurant and takeaway dedicated to the art of British fish and chips tradition. Located on the picturesque Norfolk coast, this establishment has gained significant attention since its opening in 2013 under the direction of Michelin-starred chef Galton Blackiston and his partner Spencer Gray, a former fisherman. The restaurant combines the down-to-earth dining culture of a classic "chippy" with a touch of sophistication and a strong focus on locally sourced, fresh ingredients. Spread over two floors, it offers both a relaxed atmosphere on the ground floor and a more elegant dining experience in the upper area, known as "Upstairs at No.1", with spectacular views of the sea and Cromer Pier.

Sustainable seafood restaurant Norfolk

The cuisine of "No.1 Cromer" stands for highest quality and sustainability. The "Classic Cod and Chips" is a highlight - fresh cod from the North Sea, coated in a golden, crispy batter, served with hand-cut chips and homemade tartar sauce that delights with its creamy flavor. They take particular pride in the "Skate Wing", a tender fish wing fried to perfection, offering a perfect balance of juicy texture and light bite, accompanied by thick "Chunky Chips". In the upper restaurant, there are more creative options like the "Cromer Crab Burger", served with fresh crab meat and a spicy sauce capturing the maritime tradition of the region. Vegetarians are not forgotten either: the "Mushy Pea Fritters" - crispy pea fritters - are a delicious alternative enhanced with a hint of mint.

Restaurant with sea view in Cromer

In addition to the main courses, the restaurant shines with special starters and desserts. The "Popcorn Cockles", small breaded clams with chili vinegar, are a popular starter that captures the freshness of the sea. For dessert, the "Lemon Sherbet Eton Mess" entices - a sweet and sour combination of meringue, cream, and lemon sorbet that perfectly combines lightness and enjoyment. The drinks menu offers local specialties like Norfolk cider or a draft beer developed in collaboration with a regional brewery, which pairs excellently with the fried dishes.

Cromer eatery with local ingredients

The restaurant places great emphasis on its family-friendly and inviting atmosphere. The ground floor exudes a relaxed, casual vibe, ideal for a spontaneous visit or a takeaway experience, while the upper area with its modern decor - bright wooden floors and maritime blue and gray tones - creates a slightly more upscale ambiance. The service is often highlighted as friendly and attentive, with staff proud to share the history and origins of the dishes with guests. Particularly noteworthy is the sustainability: the frying oil, a special blend of rapeseed and sunflower oil, is recycled and even converted into airplane fuel, underscoring the environmentally conscious philosophy of the establishment.

I can understand why this called the No 1, because these were the best fish and chips I've had in Cromer since I got a takeaway from here! The restaurant is so light and spacious and the views over the sea made it seem the perfect place to eat things from out of the sea! The service was friendly and professional without seeming forced, and the food was delicious. I only wanted a simple fish n chip lunch, but I was fascinated by the variety of dishes available. If there are ways of serving fish that aren't on their menu yet, I'll bet they're dreaming them up as I write! Definitely coming back, with friends!

When did chip shops tell you it’s card only and your money is useless. Not cool! Big sign in the window.

The best fish, chips and mushy peas I have ever tasted at the seaside. The batter on the cod was deliciously light and not at all oily. Good portion sizes, the service from staff was exceptional and the restaurant was lovely and clean, we will definitely be back on our next trip to Cromer. Well done to you all!

We visited No1 today. The greeting from Becca was warm and professional. The food was, as usual, excellent. I must say though that the service provided by Becca was second to none. We have seen Becca on several occasions and she always makes the day seem sunnier - what an outstanding member of No1 team. Thank you

Really nice Fish and Chip Restaurant. Unassuming and, a nice location. Our chips were a little dry but still highly recommended. The "regular" is a very generous portion size. Well packaged and the salt and real vinegar sachets are a great idea.

Avoid the takeaway. The fish and chips were so dry. I've never had a piece of cod so thin and dry. No idea why this place is so popular.

Absolutely loved the burger ! Our first stop to grab a bite in the area and it was absolutely great with a lovely view. It really does justice to its name. We had to queue up a bit as it was quite busy but it was worth the wait. Food came out quickly, fairly priced and portions are quite big. Good service and decor of restaurant is simple.

The chips were ok but nothing special. For some reason, mine tasted like cheese. My GF got some from around the corner to compare, and hers tasted nicer. It would be nice to be able to use a salt shaker and bottled vinegar for take-away chips instead of sachets

Went in for the fried brie. I'm pregnant and all the people working there were women. I asked if the Brie was pasteurised. I was LAUGHED at and told 'no, it's brie of course not ' I had to tell them most Brie in the UK is actually pasteurised and they still were too busy laughing at me to bother to go check, and then had to explain NHS recommendations and they still didn't care to check through their laugher, so I just left. Very poor service. I think the fact they find it funny that they are selling unpasteurised brie to the general public is extremely concerning.

Pretty rubbish. We asked for extra vinegar and were given two poxy vinegar sachets. No vinegar bottle available to use either. Won't be going back as they used to be much better. Chips were okay but flavourless

Excellent food and service, would recommend! Visited during lunchtime on Saturday so peak time. We were greeted at the door in a timely fashion and guided to our table. Despite how busy they were staff were friendly and professional and we didn't feel rushed in the slightest. Restaurant was also clean and well presented. Our drinks and food came out in good time after ordering, the mini fish and chips I had was fantastic! The batter was light and crisp and the fish was cooked perfectly. As you can see in the pic it was presented really well too. Yes it is a little more pricey as we sat down in the restaurant as opposed to using the regular takeaway style option (which is also available via a separate entrance.) But I would highly recommend and can see why they get so busy during the peak season. Great job guys, thank you!

Pretty decent fish and chips, chicken strips and cod are good, don't bother with the scampi.
